Vale : Michael Robin

University Blues F C mourn the recent passing of stalwart volunteer, official and supporter Michael Robin. Michael passed away just before Christmas after a long battle with cancer.

Michael began supporting Blues in 1984 and commenced his formal roles for the club in 1985 when his nephew Mick Yandell joined Blues as a player.

Mick quickly assumed matchday roles for the senior team including matchday team manager and interchange steward from 1986 to 2019. Mick was also a committee member through the late 80s and 90s and was chairman of selectors for 10 years. Mick’s service was recognised with being awarded the highly prestigious Chris Brown Best Club in 1989, the VAFA Certificate of Merrit in 2000 and in 1996, he was awarded Melbourne University Football Club life membership.

Mick’s quiet manner and timely advice to players had a profound impact on Blues success at the highest level of amateur football throughout his involvement with the club.

He commanded respect from all Blues players and officials, as well as opposition teams and umpires. Mick was always there to look after umps and provide advice. The umps “bounce off” in Lygon St late one Saturday night (post pavvy) exemplified the respect and friendship he was held in.

Over 40 years Mick was a respected elder figure to multiple generations of Blues players and a close friend of all Blues officials and fellow volunteers.

Our thoughts are with Mick’s wife Jenny and their 3 daughters and extended family. A memorial ceremony was held in Mick’s honour in Sorrento on Sun Jan 19.

Some of the Blues luminaries represented at the memorial…

Back Row: Mick Yandell, Stephen Meade, Tom Hutchins, Bob Girdwood, John Carmody, Richard Wilcox, Graeme Heazeldine, Kevin Segota
Front Row: Grant Williams, Quinton Gleeson, David Foster, Bernie Angel.
