Vale – Two Blues greats
University Blues mourns the passing of Mary Dodgson on 19 June 2017. Mary had fought a protracted battle with myeloma, and had been hospitalized for the last 6 months, so there is some relief that her pain has finally passed.
Mary’s work in the University lead her to involvement in University Sport. In the late 80’s Mary decided to extend her summer interest as scorer for the MU Cricket Club to become timekeeper for Uni Blues. Very soon her responsibilities expanded into the club secretary role which she undertook for 6 years.
Mary’s contribution as club secretary was enormous at a time when the club was very thin on the ground in terms of administration. Mary also represented the club as delegate to the Melbourne University Sports Association executive, and as club delegate to the VAFA.
Mary loved being with the players and relished whatever gossip might have been going around. Her bubbly personality, blonde hair and smart attire never went un-noticed by Blues and opposition clubs alike.
Unfortunately illness had prevented Mary continuing her match day support in recent years, but Blues on-field performances remained her first topic of conversation, and she relished phone calls with progress scores on Saturday afternoons.
Mary will be deeply missed by all those who enjoyed her friendship and company throughout the late eighties and nineties.
Funeral is scheduled for 2.30pm Tuesday 27 June at Le Pine, 81 Upper Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe. A joint function with the cricket club is proposed in the coming weeks to formally celebrate Mary’s life
University Blues mourns the passing of Ray Henderson, father of Stewart and Andrew Henderson, and uncle of John Wood. Ray always enjoyed his trips to Melbourne to watch Blues and enjoyed watching footy at the Uni and his times around Uni Blues
Ray passed away tragically on Friday at Royal Melbourne Hospital after contracting Japanese Encephalitis (viral brain infection from a mosquito bite) in Thailand about a month ago.Ray was about to retire from the family farm and start the next phase of his life..
Ray’s funeral will be on Thursday at 1pm at Church of Christ, Shepparton, followed by an old school country afternoon tea at the bowls club.
Our sympathies are with Lorraine, Stewart, Andrew and all of the Henderson clan.
