Match Report Round 15 – Vs. Old Xavs

Match Report
Old Xavs take the points against spirited Blues
With 4th-10th position anyone’s guess in VAFA William Buck Premier. The Blues who sat in 5th place came up against the 6th placed Old Xavs who were victorious in the previous meeting between the two clubs. Elsewhere the Unders had a convincing victory to keep their finals chances alive. They are the only Blues team playing this week with an 11.40 match against the 2nd placed team at Uni.
Seniors
University Blues          1.0-6         3.2-20      5.5-35      9.11-65

It was a frantic start to the game as Old Xavs and Blues traded majors early on with Ross Young kicking a tidy goal. Old Xavs midfield pressure shocked the Blues allowing the away side several chances to pull ahead. Four unanswered goals put the margin to 29 points and a big up-hill battle loomed once again for the Blues.
Tim Geappen steadied the ship with back to back goals along with Ross Young and Marc James making inroads for the Blues midfield. Momentum shifted constantly with both teams gaining ascendancy for 5 minutes then handing it back over to the opposition. With 23 points the difference going into the main break, both teams had to come fast out of the blocks in the third term.
The third term was incredibly even with both teams vying for the momentum of the game. Old Xavs grabbed the first goal before the Blues Rolls Royce Kieran Harper stepped two players, wheeled onto his right foot and slotted home. Paddy Hayes grabbed a rare 2 goal with the siren sounding on a 25-point deficit going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Blues come hard, goals to Hayes and Young saw the Blues draw to withing 14 points however a number of missed changes proved costly as the Blues bombarded the goals. A goal to Cordy bought it back to 8 points with just over 2 minutes to play however Xavs steadied and Old Xavs managed to hold out for a 14-point win.
A bye week greets all teams this weak with plenty of time to prepare for the final three games. A massive match coming up against St.Bedes at Brindisi Street. Go BLUES!!
