Match Report Round 14 – vs. Collegians

Match Report – Round 14
Blues go down by 4-points to Collegians
Ladder leaders Collegians played host to the Blues at the Harry Trott, a venue that has not been kind to the Blues in recent years. The Under 19’s were the only squad to record a win as they cruised to victory in the derby with Uni Blacks.
Seniors
Collegians                         4.3-27        4.6-30         6.9-45       7.13-55
University Blues              1.3-9           3.7-25         5.8-38       7.8-50
Buoyed by the massive 46-point victory vs. SKOB, the Blues were ready to step out onto Harry Trott Oval and make a statement. With 4th spot up in the air, the Blues chances of sealing a finals place are well and truly high.
Collegians came out strong, scoring four goals to the Blues one courtesy of Ayce Cordy. Collegians first quarter slick ball movement led to scoreboard pressure and had the Blues on the back foot. The backline of the Blues was in for tough outing as Lappin and Townley were hard at work.
The second quarter was a much-improved performance with Townley and Timmy Carr kicking the only goals. The defensive pressure of the Blues was back at the level of the previous week and the Blues worked their way back into the match. It was a midfield battle with both defences staying strong however the Blues were able to gain the ascendency going into the third.
After the main break the goals came back into the game with Collegians grabbing the first goal of the game. It was Cam Williams’ quarter though as he kicked two superb goals to have the Blues well within touching distance. Ayce Cordy was once again at his brilliant best however it was Jez Taylor leading the Blues on with an inspired performance. Paddy Hayes and the hashtag King, Tommy Quinn, were also slogging it out to bring all four points home.
The ladder leaders were rattled when Ayce Cordy scored within the first two minutes while a snap special served up by Jimmy Carr had the Blues close to victory. However, with the clock running out, a confusing “non decision” led to the final goal that put the Lions in front and sealed their victory.
The Blues have played some of their best football over the last few weeks. They remain within touching difference of the 4 and only 2 points off 9th. Wins are crucial and it’s a big game this week against Xavs at the Main.
