Round 4 Results - A Pair of Losses & A Pair of Wins
Seniors – Lie Down In The Last

After last week's hard-fought win in the wet, University Blues were looking to make it two in a row against De La Salle at Dairy Bell. The Blues started well enough but couldn't quite get the goals on the board kicking 2.3 in the first quarter while the opposition kicked 4.1. The ground was a touch uneven and the wind gusty, but this didn't matter to Blues' ruckman Jack Watts who continued with his superb form. In the second quarter, the Blues picked up the pressure on the Lasallians. Each time a De La player had the ball they were tackled and the harassed. This caused turnovers and the Blues looked to capitalise with a fast break. Running defender Mick Monteith typified the Blue effort as he worked his man over, then ran the ball forward and into attack. Continuing his brilliant start to senior football, Will Cuningham was fantastic in the clinches showing strength over the ball that belied his years. In a low-scoring quarter, the Blues had the edge going in at half-time 4-9-33 to De La Salle's 4-3-27.
Supporters from both sides took shelter from the cold wind in the clubrooms before returning to the terraces to see De La Salle break open the game. They doubled their score while restricting the Blues to two goals three. Doing his task in defence, Andy Christensen stuck to his man in a disciplined effort while Pat Hayes was another defender battling away. The margin was a solitary goal at the last break and the match could have gone either way. Unfortunately for the Blues, the Sallians proved to efficient in the final term, as well as, for that matter, the final half. The Blues had more shots at goal for the game but couldn't make them count with twice as many points as goals. De La Salle, meanwhile, added another three goals to run out 19 point winners. Ben McConnell was one Blue who battled it out to the very end. He worked well and tirelessly with Watts to give his team-mates every chance. The loss leaves the Blues in a precarious position with only one win from the first four games. Next Saturday's game against Old Carey shapes as a must win. Get down to the Main Oval and the Pavvy to support the Blues.

Round 4 Preview - VAFA Premier Football
Round three left only the Lions from Albert Park unbeaten as Xavs and St Bernards dropped their first games, while Caulfield and Trinity remain the only clubs yet to enjoy the spoils of victory. Between the other seven clubs there is a very even spread of teams, all of whom could rightly have strong claims to fill the three other places in the top four. So we move on to round four.

Round 3 Results - A Full House!
Seniors – Chalk Up First Win
After two losses on two sunny days, Uni Blues welcomed a change in weather and a change in fortunes. An important factor in the previous two losses has been slow starts and although the Blues didn't explode from the blocks, neither did the opposition. Newly-promoted Caulfield Grammarians bettered the Blues in the first term at Elsterwick Park by three points despite Blues having more scoring shots. Pete Summers was a driving force in the mid-field for the improved first-term efforts from the Blues. His leadership, attack and skill helped clear the ball from the often-slippery contests. In a defensive-oriented second stanza, the Blues scored the only goal to go into the long break 3 points up. For the Blues, barrel-chested Charles Shaw was moving well up forward and scoring goals while Pat Hayes was rebounding well from half-back.
The Blues surged in the third term but couldn't quite capitalise on the scoreboard. Ben McConnell thrived in the wet conditions, proving that he loves a scrap in the mud. Will Cuningham is built in the mould of McConnell and he too looked to be enjoying the sticky conditions. But in the forward line the Blues were only able to score two goals and five behinds. The Fielders stayed in touch, sneaking through two goals as well. All was set for a tight final quarter with only seven points the difference. Thankfully it was the talent and A Grade experience of the Blues that saw them come home with a wet sail. Ruckman Jack Watts continued to work tirelessly for his on-ball brigade in a best on ground display. He contested all over the ground to work the ball forward where Shaw slotted his fourth for the day. Cuningham and McConnell were others that slipped forward to kick crucial goals in the 26 point win. The success means that the Blues are on the board for season 2012 and will look to roar into life in the coming weeks.
