The University Blues Football Club are extremely disappointed to announce  that this Saturday’s Senior and Reserves matches against Old Xaverians have been moved from the University Oval.

The matches will be played at Ransford Oval, Park Street, Parkville with the normal starting times of 11:40am for the Reserves and 2:00pm for the Seniors. Further details in relation to the venue and facilities will be sent in the Blues Brief tomorrow. We would like to thank West Brunswick Football Club for the generous offer at such short notice and appreciate their assistance.

Earlier this week the Club was advised that he VAFA had engaged an independent consultant to assess the state of the University Oval playing surface.

On Wednesday morning, the Club was then informed that, given the content of the consultant’s report, it was deemed the University Oval was not safe or considered a secure venue under the VAFA rules. We were formally notified that the Club had to procure a replacement ground and failure to do so would result in a forfeit. As a result, the Club had no alternative but to move the match.

The University Blues values the welfare and safety of all players who play matches at the University Oval and would never compromise that.  Whilst not perfect and undoubtedly suffering the effects of a wet winter and much traffic, the University Oval is currently in the best state it has been since late May.  Having considered the matter at length and after reviewing a separate independent report commissioned by Melbourne University Sport this week, the Club considers the University Oval playing surface would have been suitable for play for this Saturday’s matches.

As such, the Club is both disappointed and perplexed by the process that has been undertaken by this week. We have many unanswered questions in relation to the precedent that has now been set and how it will be handled, used and applied in future seasons across the all grades and competitions.

At this stage, both the Blues and Blacks have not been advised of the process required for the University Oval to be considered playable or secure again, particularly for next week’s University derby.

We hope to see the Blues Community turn out in force at the Ransford and Crawford on Saturday and for the remainder of the season.
