Ulverstone in mid-July? It may not be everyone's idea of the preferred destination for a winter break but the trek to Tasmania on the weekend had its rewards for Jack Watts, Al Austin and Dan Nicholson. The young guns from Uni Blues were members of the VAFA Under 23 squad that proved far too good for the TFC representative team.
Jack Watts had the extra honour of serving as captain of the Big V outfit and led from the front, kicking two goals and being amongst Victoria's better players. Dan Nicholson showed the dash for which is renowned in VAFA circles and was also named amongst the best players as the Vics outclassed their hosts by 71 points in heavy conditions. Al Austin was also prominent throughout, his sterling defensive work serving to ensure that the boys from the Apple Isle never posed a genuine threat to the mainlanders' dominance.
The victory clinched the Australian Amateur Football Council Championship for Victoria. Congratulations to Jack, Al and Dan from all at Blues.
