Uni Blues players were prominent in the weekend's successful VAFA representative teams.
The VAFA's winning weekend began on Saturday on the Gold Coast. Blues defender Al Austin wore the Big V jumper with distinction as a member of the VAFA Under 21 squad that overpowered the AFLQ U21 outfit to win by 43 points.
Action on Sunday took place at Elsternwick where Andrew Lowcock, Matt Torney and Jack Watts were amongst the senior VAFA team that was too good for AFL Sydney. The Vics ran out winners by 80 points in a dominant display.
Blues skipper "Ace" Lowcock continued his recent fine form in front of the big sticks, kicking two of the Big V's 20 majors. 2008 Woodrow Medallist Jack Watts was also prominent in attack, returning 2 goals, 4 behinds and earning recognition as one the VAFA's best players.
Llewyn Butler and Dan Nicholson were members of the Under 19 Victorian team that prevailed against the VCFL Under 19 outfit in Sunday's curtain raiser. Dan was not only co-captain of the team, which drew away in the last quarter for a four goal win, but was acknowledged as the VAFA's best player (along with fellow co-captan, Dan Noonan of Old Xav's).
Nicholson had featured in pre-match press coverage last week, as Age correspondent Paul Daffey suggested he would be under scrutiny from AFL scouts. Daffey's weekly column included the following:
"AFL recruiters this season have already kept a close eye on Amateurs teenagers Dan Noonan and Dan Nicholson.
Noonan is a key forward from Old Xaverians, while Nicholson is a wingman and half-back from the Western District.
Nicholson went to school at St Pat's Ballarat and, having come to Melbourne to study, is now in his second season with University Blues. Some claim the speedy 19-year-old is the best player in Premier Section.
In a recent game, Nicholson was tagged by an Old Melburnians player whose teammates call him Turbo. By the end of the game, Turbo was looking for a new nickname. "
Congratulations to all players.
