2004 TRIPLE PREMIERSHIP REUNION - 4 JULY 2009

E-mail Print PDF

In September 2004, Uni Blues made history - delivering three premiership pennants to the Pavvy including an elusive A-Section senior flag.

2004 was a golden year for the Blues which saw the club riddled with talent and depth. Coach Kanis (the inventor of themes such as ‘Blue Collar Blues’ and ‘Hiroshima Blues’) held the reins in his rookie season. Then Club captain Quinton Gleeson likened the senior team's campaign to Lonhro's run in the 2004 Australian Cup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_r8W0i3JYE  - "...we were the best in the field and although we ran into a couple of minor roadblocks during the run to the line, it wasn’t long before we let down and did away with the opposition..." Gleeson said in a recent interview.

First, the Clubbies took the title as Premiers and Champions – an embarrassment of riches saw them set the scene for what would be a formidable year.

The masterful '04 Reserves premiership outfit lead by the Great Sir Thomas Hutchins were a team that would have troubled many senior grade sides. On the big day on the big stage, the Reserves belted Old Scotch by 95 points. This was a sign of things to come.

By 2.30pm the Uni Blues Twos had custody of their 4 Reserves flag in a decade as they welcomed the senior team to the field.  Inspired by injured team members and a recent barren history, the seniors took on a determined opposition but in a similar time frame to that in which Bomber Thomas did away with his Chicken Parmas, so did the Blues despatch of their opponent St Bernards.  The day was celebrated long and hard by everyone associated with our great club.

It’s hard to believe that the post-premiership events including the burn off, "who threw the egg" and Maccas' Mad Tuesday occurred more than five years ago.  To ensure we never forget this sensational experience, a TRIPLE PREMIERSHIP REUNION will take place on 4 July 2009 @ Naughtons Hotel.

All those associated with the club in 2004 are encouraged to attend.
