Big Season Beckons for Blues Under 19s

University Blues has a proud tradition of a successful Under 19 group that develops its members both as footballers and young men.  Its graduates have included players who have progressed to senior AFL ranks.

Season 2012 at University Oval is laden with promise and Blues is pleased to have Matt Embling back at the helm of its Under 19 team.  It will be Matt's fourth year as coach and he reports that heartening numbers from last season's crop of juniors are already on the pre-season track.  Newcomers are more than welcome to experience football at Melbourne Uni's Premier Section club.

After a 2011 season that had its disappointments, the theme of the Under 19 team for its next campaign is "Not Making Up the Numbers in 2012".

Coaches Appointed - Watts & Prendergast to steer Blues

Senior Coach - Uni Blues is very pleased to officially announce that Fergus Watts has been appointed to the position of Senior Coach for Season 2012. After serving as Blues’ Assistant Senior Coach in 2011, Fergus brings an extensive football background to this role, both at the elite and amateur level. Fergus was All Australian at under 18 level and a first round AFL draft pick in 2003. He spent 4 years on the senior lists of Adelaide and St. Kilda from 2004 to 2007. Over that four year period he, perhaps uniquely in AFL football, was coached by four different senior AFL coaches. This provided Fergus with the opportunity to directly learn the teaching methods and tactical game styles of Gary Ayres, Neil Craig, Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon, together with a myriad of assistant AFL level coaches.

Assistant Coach - Uni Blues are also delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Prendergast to the position of Assistant Coach. Ian played 65 games for Carlton between 2001 and 2006 after being drafted with pick number 58 in the 1998 AFL Draft from Kerang Rovers. Following his AFL career, Ian moved to South Australia where he played for the South Adelaide in the SANFL in 2007 and 2008. Ian studied Law at Monash during his Carlton years and worked as a lawyer in both Adelaide and Melbourne. He is currently the General Manager of Player Relations in the AFL Players' Association and has been making headlines recently with his involvement in the AFL players collective bargaining agreement.
