Seniors vs. St Bernards
The nor-westerly blowing across the main oval favoured the Newman College end and St Bernards had first use of it but were well held by the tight Blues defence led brilliantly by the Skipper, Hugh Vickers-Willis, and at quarter time scores were level and we were well placed to make our move.
The second quarter was a different story and the Snow Dogs attacked into the breeze and made the most of the flukey conditions kicking a further three whilst keeping the Blues goalless. The 18 point half time deficit could have been far worse and Coach Gleeson asked for a better second half.
Joel Moloney and “Rocket” Eade were sensational around the stoppages with Rippo and Mugsy being well held by their minders. Paddy Hayes, Marc James and Tommy Quinn were proving damaging across half forward, and “Swooper” and Tom MacKenzie were providing something for us to kick to, but we were not able to hit the Snow Dogs where it counted, on the scoreboard.
An even third term where both sides squandered opportunities and regularly turned the ball over across half forward meant that there was a lot to be done in the final term. We would need a big last quarter, and everyone lifted.
5 goals in the first three quarters and another 5 in the last quarter was enough to get over the line.
Finally, we win a close one.
