Under 19 Premier vs Uni Blacks
Not sure if it was the early morning start, or just the fact that the Blacks wanted the ball more than us, but early doors, it looked like we were in for a long day. The Blacks attack on the ball was fierce and they were playing the way we wanted. The Blacks teamed better than us, and had far more of the ball early and kicked the first three goals of the game by the 15 minute mark. Finally a bit of cohesion and endeavour and we got on the board and by quarter time blacks held a handy 12 point lead. (2.2.14 to 4.2.26)
After some pearls of wisdom from coach Scotland, we came out far more committed to the contest and started playing the style of football that is more like the required standard for the VAFA Under 19 Premier competition.
In the absence of skipper George Osti, Ed Keach was everywhere and leading from the front, ably assisted by Tom Wilson in defence, we started to take control winning more contested footy and putting some scores on the board and went in at half time with a small 2 point lead (5.6.36 to 5.4.34), but the signs were good.
The Blues took control in the third term with Nick Francis up front as a target, we set up a lead that would prove to be too much for the Black to handle. Nick Hanlon, Luke Bell and Dom Baker were constantly winning the ball in the mid field and banging the ball long where big Matty Blair was proving a handful, and the blues led at the last change by 19 points (8.6.54 to 5.5.35).
The final quarter won’t go down as an epic, with one a solitary being scored for the term, but the damage had been done and led to the Blues recording their first win for the season and getting to finally sing their rendition of the song… and it was over their next door neighbours, the Blacks, and kicked a big day for the club off in the best possible way.
