Seniors - Annihilate Old Essendon After Slow Start

Things didn't quite go to plan for University Blues in the first quarter as Old Essendon came out with a full head of steam and kicked the game's first 5 goals. Coach Kanis sat in his chair looking forlorn, clearly wondering if it was all worth it. Fortunately for JK, the Blues improved from half-way through the second quarter, and only allowed their foes another 1 goal after quarter time. The Blues limited Old Essendon's scoring in the second half to 3 behinds. Mark Paterson (3 goals) is in vintage form for Uni Blues and he won his third UCLA t-shirt as he continually won the hard ball through the middle. Paterson is finding it difficult to create room in his wardrobe for the new t-shirts. Dan Nicholson (2 goals) is an exciting new player and played brilliantly despite being split open in an "interesting" collision. Sam Chadwick has returned from Europe in great form as he kicked 4 goals. Ben McConnell and Jeremy Mugavin continued their consistently good seasons on the ball. The last quarter turned into a one-sided affair as the Blues piled on 10 goals, 8 behinds to no score. Next week the Blues welcome Old Ivanhoe as they try to sew up fourth place.

Reserves - Destroy the Bombers As Planes Fly By

In a scrappy and wind-affected game, the Mighty Uni Blues Twos prevailed by 135 points against Old Essendon. The aeroplanes flying overhead weren't the only conveyances in for a bumpy ride, as the ball bounced and swirled around making football a more difficult game than necessary. Quinton Gleeson took some time to adjust to conditions with a couple of wayward shots, but eventually found his radar and kicked 5 goals in a best on ground effort. Fellow veterans, Alex Suvoltos and Liam Quin also found their range as they kicked 4 and 3 respectively. Suvoltos played well through the middle along with compatriot Dan Carmody. Ben Millard and Tom Pryde provided targets up forward and continually made contests and created play in the difficult conditions. Millard, particularly, is in a rich vein of form at the right time of year. David Brady played well across half back and half forward in a game that saw a number of Blues players play very well. Al Lyon, Jack Heinz and Jono Vickers-Willis also kicked multiples as the Blues ran riot over a hapless opponent.

University Blues: 21 - 17 - 143

Old Essendon:     1 - 2 - 8

Best: Q.Gleeson, A.Suvoltos, B.Millard, D.Carmody, D.Brady, T.Pryde

Under 19 - Consolidate Fourth With Win Over Beaumaris

Uni Blues Under 19s enjoyed their fourth win on the trot over 5th placed Beaumaris to continue their run at the 2009 finals. Beaumaris began the day with the same amount of wins as the Blues but with a weaker percentage. At the end of the afternoon, the Blues are a game and percentage clear of their rivals. Matt Embling's charges have hit form at the right time of year and are looking like they could do some damage after they complete the last game of the home and away season next week against 2nd placed Old Xaverians at the Crawford Oval.

University Blues: 14 - 8 - 92

Beaumaris:         8 - 4 - 52
