Round 9 Results - Students Slip Past Scotch

Seniors

Uni Blues made it three wins on the trot with a solid win over the highly fancied Old Scotch. A big crowd assembled at the Main Oval to see Dirk Heinz kick a bag of 5 up forward and win the UCLA t-shirt. A relatively pedestrian first half made things difficult for Heinz and his team mates, but a solid effort in the 3rd quarter put the heat on Scotch and proved insurmountable. Pacman Smith and Mick Lewis kicked three each, while Matt Torney, Mark McLeod and John Meagher were solid as a rock down back. Jeremy Mugavin was slick and prosperous through the middle, and captain Andrew Lowcock continually won the hard ball and hurt the opposition.

Reserves

The train that is University Blues Reserves kept on rolling this week against Old Scotch. Veteran Quentin Gleeson was welcomed back and didn't disappoint with 3 goals up front. New Blue, Paddy Hayes also kicked 3 in a dominant team performance. Shudders of fear are running through the opposition with the Mighty Blues Twos continually winning comfortably. A spread of 12 goal-kickers enjoyed the day, with Chris Tate collecting countless possessions through the centre. Tom Pryde and Jono Vickers-Willis also played great games, and John Bailey kicked a great goal.

Club XVIII

Uni Blues Club XVIII's were looking to make amends for a disappointing start last week, and the unlucky recipients were a gallant Old Scotch. A big first quarter with the breeze saw the Blues with a grip on the jugular. Jarrod Villani had a welcome return up forward with 5 goals, but couldn't beat a superb effort by centre-half forward Liam Quin who kicked 6 in a dominant display. Troy Auld played a more disciplined game and took a number of timely marks, while Diarmid Hayter, Paul Pavli, Ollie Lade and Mitch Young moved the ball well through the middles of the ground.

University Blues: 17 - 15 - 117

Under 19

The Uni Blues Unders were looking to atone for an unsatisfactory effort last week and ended up beating Marcellin by 78 points. A much more accurate effort in front of goals saw 11 players kick between the taller posts. Despite a slowish start, Woolley, Hartnell and McLure all kicked 3 goals each. Ben McClure enjoyed a great day collecting the ball at will, while Kitchen, Maddocks and Foott also saw plenty of the ball. The Unders have now got their season on track and a number of teams will be wary of the juggernaut as it rolls toward finals football.

University Blues:  20 - 18 - 138
