U19's defeat Blacks in The Crescent Cup

After a good effort for 2½ quarters last week against reigning Grand Finalist De La Salle the boys looked ready to take on their co-tenants, the Blacks. The Blacks had been in good form winning their last three games.

The game started with a high level of intensity with the Blues having the better of the earlier exchanges. Blues took a two goal lead into the first break.

The key points for the day were reinforced at the break and the boys responded to kick the first five goals of the quarter to extend the lead to forty points with five minutes left in the first half. Blacks hit back with two goals before the break to reduce the lead to twenty eight points at the main break.

The Blacks hit back hard in the third quarter with extra numbers at the footy which assisted them to apply pressure to the Blues defenders. The Blacks kicked four goals to nil and the lead was under a goal at the final break.

A few choice strong words were exchanged at ¾ and time the boys responded only for the Blacks to do the same. The game had now taken on epic status with great skills and pressure being witnessed by all that came to watch.

Blacks extended their lead to eight points with only 3 minutes left.

Then the Blue spirit rose once more. Butler kicked the goal to bring the lead back to two points. Once again we needed to get another centre clearance to allow us to score. This was not to be as the Blacks cleared only for the Blues half back line to repell. From there the ball was moved precisely and swiftly and eventually into the hands of a strong leading Jack Townley who marked forty metres from goal. At this time Frank reached for the bell and gave it one almighty shake. This was to be the final kick of the day. Townley had already slotted through four for the day, a suprising return after coming second last in the goal kicking exercise at training on Thursday night. He went back and coolly slotted home his 5th and the winner. Blues won by 4 points and the celebrations began.

The best players  for the day were Jack Townley, Tom Foott, Jack Maxwell, Tom Maddocks, Daniel Gumley, Shaw Kitchen.
