Round 11 Review

A big crowd, a willing contest but no four points. Such was the story at the Uni Main on Saturday when the Seniors and Reserves Blues teams met Old Xaverians. Xav's may be the benchmark in senior A-Grade football but they couldn't quite shake a youthful and tenacious Blues outfit in a see-sawing affair. Fourteen points was the final margin but John Kanis' men will be keen to have another crack at Xavier if a return bout was to transpire in September.

The Twos had a head of steam prior to Saturday courtesy of a run of victories but they were undone by a sluggish start against Xavier. The likes of Mick Steinbach battled manfully but the loss at home will have stung Team Gunga, particularly with Xavier now sitting one rung below them on the ladder in third place.

It was a different story over on the Crawford Oval where the Clubbies and Under 19s both coasted to victory. In Mick "Bomber" Thomas' 150th outing for the club, the Clubbies came to the party with a 10 goal win over St Bernards that featured five majors from Tim McKinley. There is a never a dull moment following the Blues Unders in 2009. Amongst a season that has had more ups and downs than a Pyrenees stage of the Tour De France, it all came together for the undergrads on Saturday. A stirring victory over St Bedes/Mentone was the result, featuring a 5-goal clinic from Stu Herben.

Round 12 Preview

With Blues' seniors poised just outside the four, it meets another team on 5 wins, Old Brighton, down by the bay. This is unquestionably a game of real consequence for both clubs. The Twos also have a great opportunity to atone for last week's disappointment. With Old Brighton one game above them on the ladder, a bayside victory would secure Blues top spot in the A-Section Reserves.

A huge day for the Unders arrives on Saturday with an encounter against Uni Blacks at 2:00 pm on the University Main. Blues nabbed the Crescent Cup with a goal after the siren in their previous encounter this season so will be keen to maintain their record against the co-tenants.

The Clubbies will be displaying their wares on the centerpiece of VAFA football. They take on Old Xavs(2) at Sportscover Arena from 11:40 am. Go Blues!

Blues Brief Round 11, 2009

Round 10 Review

It was a disappointing weekend for the Seniors who were knocked off by a resurgent Collegians. The loss sees Blues remain in the top four but with several other teams on 5-5 the competition remains very tight.

The Twos' great form continues as they reversed the result from round one, beating Collegians comfortably on their home turf. While not quite the crushing win some were predicting, the signs are very good for Gunga's angry army.

Unfortunately the Unders fell to an always dangerous phenomenon: a desperate Old Trinity. The Clubbies however had a solid return to form with a thumping win over Old Xavs at Koonung Reserve.

Round 11 Preview
This week the Seniors take on competition benchmark Old Xaverians at the University Main. It will be a big challenge for the Blues who did get very close the last time these two sides met. John Kanis, I am sure, will be engineering plans for an upset!

The Twos take on fellow top four side Old Xavs in a clash that should give them a good measure of their form. Gunga's men will be hopeful of dispatching last year's Grand Final foe.

The Unders this week take up the challenge of St Bedes, while the Clubbies face cellar dwellers St Bernard's at the Crawford in what will also be the 150th game of three-time premiership player, two-time Reserves Best and Fairest and MUFC Life Member, Michael "Bomber" Thomas. Go Blues!

Blues Brief Round 10, 2009

Round 9 Review

Sometimes it is just nice to come home. And this was the case upon returning to the University Main, where the Blues made it a happy homecoming by touching up Old Scotch by 50 points.
For the Twos the result looked in no doubt from the first bounce, with ferocious attack on the footy by Blues forcing many Scotch errors. In the end it became a rout, with Gunga's men crushing the red legs by 62 points.
To complete a great round for all Uni Blues teams, the Under 19 and Club 18 squads both grabbed the points. The Unders knocked off Marcellin while the Clubbies had a thumping victory over the Scotchies.

Round 10 Preview
This week the second half of the year commences out at Harry Trott Oval against the Purple Plague, Collegians. In round one the Blues easily accounted for Collegians but the Wesley Boys always seem to grow an inch at the Trott. It will be a tough game but the Blues are in exciting touch at the minute and might just lower those regal Collegian colours!

Last time the Twos met Collegians it was a frustrating day ending in a surprise three point loss. Since then things have looked up for Gunga's men and a much improved performance is to be expected this week.

The Unders take on a struggling Old Trinity at Marles Fields and would be hopeful of a win, while the Clubbies face a tough game against Old Xavs at Koonung Reserve. Go Blues!

Blues Brief Round 9, 2009

Round 8 Review

In amongst the water birds and flora the Blues Seniors were able to break their Chelsworth Park drought on Saturday, downing Old Ivanhoe by 16 points. The win has propelled the Seniors into fourth spot on the A section ladder and positions them well for the second half of the year.

The Twos had a day out against the Hoers, belting the Maroons by over 13 goals. It seems any early season wobbles from the Early Gamers are far behind them.

It was a frustrating week for the Unders - inaccuracy stole any chance of victory against Old Scotch. In the remaining game, the Clubbies battled but could not quite do enough against Prahran.

Round 9 Preview

This week the Blues return to the University to take on rivals Old Scotch. Both teams are locked on four wins which can only add to the atmosphere of a traditionally fiery game.

The Two's are traveling very nicely of late but it has been a while since they have played a top four side! If Gunga's men can produce their recent form, they should be a bit too good for the Scotchies.

The Young Guns finally have a breather from a top four side, this week taking on Marcellin at the Crawford. Meanwhile, Supercoach Tom Granleese is hoping to break the string of Clubbies' losses and engineer a win this week against Old Scotch.

Go Blues!

In September 2004, Blues made history - delivering three premiership pennants to the Pavvy including an A-Section senior flag. The five year anniversary of this achievement will be marked on 4 July 2009 with a 2004 Premiership Reunion (coinciding with Blues hosting Old Xav's at Uni Oval). Further details will be available soon but all those that were present in 2004 (whether in the Seniors, the Reserves, the Clubbies or simply leaning on the bar at the Pavvy) should mark their diaries now.
