Uni Blues' 2004 Best & Fairest and Premiership player Ross Young has taken out WA football's highest honour after winning the Sandover Medal overnight.
The former Uni Blues and Carlton onballer was the dominant player in this year's WAFL competition, also winning the league's Player of the Year award from the Football Budget and the West Australian newspaper.
According to reports on WA Today (http://www.watoday.com.au/sport/youngs-sandover-completes-clean-sweep-20090915-fo0g.html), Youngy collected over 30 possessions in 14 of his 20 games for the Demons. Winning the Medal erases any disappointment from last season when Youngy finished third after breaking his collarbone while leading the poll. While his team finished out of the finals, the Donald-bred player is set to pull on a Perth jumper again next season.
Along with his 2004 season with Uni Blues, winning the Medal is another highlight of a distinguished playing career to date. Young offered the following to the media scrum last night:
"While I cherish my debut game for Carlton, this is right up there," Young said.
"I dont think I'm a chance of returning to AFL. I'm not sure I'm playing as good football as when I was drafted but I feel like I'm improving all the time."
Youngy featured in the WAFL representative side earlier in the season, as was reported here on uniblues.com: http://www.uniblues.com/blue-bloods/past-players/150-young-gun-smoking-it-in-the-wafl.html
We also uncovered the story of Youngy's first outing in the Uni Blues strip, courtesy of his then Under 19 coach Tim Giles: http://www.uniblues.com/blue-bloods/past-players/134-where-istim-giles.html
Congratulations to Ross from all at Uni Blues!
