Where's Wattsy???

usatripThe Big Dance begins this Saturday after much training and a few pre-season matches. El Presidente Williams described the intra-club match at Princes Park "like dancing with your sister" but previous Uni Blues/Collegians matches have been a bit more like dancing with your brother for two particular players.

Jack and Fergus Watts have been squaring off in different jumpers for the past year. Although they lived together, they trained and played separately. Jack for Blues and Fergus for the Lions.

This arrangement proved successful, Jack-Jack-Jacky won the Woodrow medal and the Uni Blues B&F, while the Fergburger took out the league goal-kicking. Not a bad year for the Watts household.

2009 is a different year however. The main game (2pm Saturday, get there early for the Clubbies and Reserves) this week will see people of both supporter groups asking "Where's Wattsy?". Fergus will probably be swanning around in his new role as forwards coach for Collegians but Jack is another story altogether.

Seasoned and intrepid reporter Perry Hesslop tracked Jack Watts down in New York City, a long way from the Main Oval at Melbourne University. Watts has been sifting around the US of A and before heading off to Europe to see some more of the world and tick some more boxes.

Watts spoke of his love for Uni Blues at length to Hesslop. This was highlighted in two particular ways. Firstly, he has timed his international sojourn to end in time for him to attend the Uni Blues Ball (July the 11th, lock it in). Secondly, although he has completed a stellar 2008, he gleefully spoke of returning to pull on the Blues' jumper in the Club XVIII side under Supercoach Granleese. He described Granleese as " an oracle of the modern game" and as an "inspiration to young men the world over". Close your eyes and imagine for a moment the brilliance of a young Jack Watts on the field for the Uni Blues Club XVIII under the tutelage of Supercoach Granleese. An unstoppable duo. A moment of beauty in a sometimes long football season.usatrip2

All supporters look forward to that moment, but for the time being there are other glories to behold. Saturday sees the Clubbies, Reserves and Seniors on the Main Oval, with the Under 19s taking to the Crawford Oval just a short walk away. Make sure you get down, it promises to be an exciting start to the 2009 season. Best of luck to all involved, and best of luck to Jack for the remainder of his trip.
