Andrew “Coxy” Wilson was a key member of the Uni Blues outfit that climbed from B-Grade into an A-Grade Grand Final in the mid-90’s. He served the club with distinction, typically from defence and midfield, in seasons 1993 to 1995 and again in 1999. Coxy says that his most memorable game was the milestone 300th VAFA senior appearance of current club coach John Kanis which took place against Old Xaverians at Toorak Park in 1995. “Firstly because it was great to see Old Xav's players line up for the champion and secondly because we won.”
Coxy also has strong memories of the infamous Dan Hayter incident at Banyule in 1994 (“no-one stands on big Dan’s toes”), a classic Nathan Cavalier banana goal against Therry and “destroying Mazenod to get promoted from B-Grade”. Off the field, the antics at the “infamous Spa Pavvy” make it Coxy’s most memorable social event at the club.
Not surprisingly, Coxy says the highlights of his time at Blues were the final series of 1994 and 1995 (in B-Grade and A-Grade respectively), each of which culminated in a Grand Final appearance. His lasting regret is that the club fell short on the big day on both occasions. The best players Coxy saw during his time at Uni Blues were Nathan Cavalier, Aaron “Duxy” Davies and Gil McLachlan, whom Coxy recalls “could take a grab or two”.
After residing in London, Lausanne (Switzerland) and Moscow over the past decade, Coxy is currently living in Helsinki, Finland with his wife and 10-month old son, Samu. He says that he will be returning to Melbourne in September “to see the Uni Blues win the flag”.
