As the wind was blowing Gerry Westmore off the first tee you could have been mistaken for thinking the Masters had been transported to Elsternwick Park in September with a gale blowing down the ground. Although the forecast rain had stayed away, the windy conditions at 13th Beach made things very tricky indeed and would require a outstanding round to take out the Masters.
With some familiar faces from last year returning including defending champion Joe Sturrock, Geoff Allen and Barry Church, it was also great to see several Masters debutantes including Mick Meagher (past player and son of current player John), Roger Collins (past player) and several members from the 1997 under 19’s premiership side. There were several highlights for the day, however the wind made them few and far between. Marcus Coleman was a clear winner of the Brian Blood Disservice to Fashion award sporting the finest pair of Italian leather loafers instead of regulation golf shoes. Unfortunately Coley spent so much time in the rough the aforementioned loafers are but a picture of their former glory.
Michael Kordick flew out of the blocks around the first 9 holes posting a stableford score of 15, however he faded in the second half to only post another 6 points on the back 9. This left the gate open for the eventual winner Roger Collins who posted 29 points to take out the 2011 Blue Bloods’ Masters and have his named added to the trophy. Chris Taylor and Geoff Allen also ended up carding admirable rounds in the difficult conditions.
Thank you to all who attended and made it a great day. Look out for a new format for the Masters in 2012 with the tournament coming closer to home to one of Melbourne’s finest courses.
