Relegation? Cue a Karamoshos long bomb
As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we recall a relegation scrap from the late 80s…
Late in the 1987 season, notable for the return of Alan Salter as coach after three years as coach of Ivanhoe, the Blues were faced with relegation for the third consecutive year.
The crucial match was against Old Xaverians in round 16, in which rover Denny Karamoshos kicked a long goal on his non-preferred left foot in the dying minutes to give the Blues victory over the premiership fancy by one point; it was a win that several Blues players and officials from that era regard among their most memorable victories at the University Oval. The Blues then scored rousing victories over Caulfield Grammarians and North Old Boys to give them three consecutive victories in the final three games and seven wins for the season.
