As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we re-visit season 1989…
The Blues were on top of the ladder for the first half of the 1989 season, only then to falter. In the lead-up to the finals, Don MacInnes was suspended for two games after accidentally kicking an opponent. Rover Denny Karamoshos damaged his knee at Old Paradians’ Bundoora ground while half-back Andrew Norman damaged his knee at a party, by dancing on top of a fridge and falling off. Moods brightened in the week before the first semi-final against Marcellin when Michael Yeo (5-time Senior Best & Fairest of the club), eager to soak up the return to finals, turned up for training. While jogging a slow lap, Yeo unloaded a torpedo that went spiralling through the goals from 50 metres out. Darrell Gust, jogging in a group ahead of Yeo, broke the appreciative silence. “All hail,” he said, prompting several players to drop to their knees.
