Bolt from the Blues - Round 17 - Pavvies and a Premiership

As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we recall the salad days of Saturday night Pavvies led by Justin Jamieson in the mid-90s…

In addition to the return of “international pavvy” there was “heavy pavvy", which featured loud music, and Jamieson’s introduction of “spa pavvy”, in which a portable jacuzzi was wheeled in front of the pavilion during the last quarter of home games.  As dusk fell and the sun lowered behind the bluestone and ivy of the residential colleges, players and supporters sipped their drinks amid the relaxing bubbles.  When the supporters had gone home, players emerged from the soap and froth of the jacuzzi and slid around the pavilion’s parquetry floor.

As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history and with an eye fixed on this Saturday’s 70s & 80s Day, we recall the arrival of a Uni Blues giant from this era…

Another charismatic player to emerge in the 1970s was Michael Yeo. Having been named captain of Old Carey at 19 years of age, Yeo was sought by a host of A Section clubs. As a 21-year old medical student, he was doing an internship at Heidelberg’s Austin Repatriation Hospital when the newly graduated Peter Brukner asked the ruckman to join him for lunch. Over a sandwich in the hospital café, Yeo agreed to attend a training session with the Blues. Brukner’s response was to rush to a phone and ring Alan Salter.

Bolt from the Blues - Round 14 - A Tough Day at Reservoir

As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we recall a 1976 encounter against Reservoir Old Boys…

Before the game, Blues half-forward Michael Sleeman was walking into Reservoir Old Boys’ ground, the Barling Reserve, when two heavily tattooed supporters warned him there was no way he would finish the game.
