Bolt from the Blues - Round 17 - Pavvies and a Premiership

E-mail Print PDF

As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we recall the salad days of Saturday night Pavvies led by Justin Jamieson in the mid-90s…

In addition to the return of “international pavvy” there was “heavy pavvy", which featured loud music, and Jamieson’s introduction of “spa pavvy”, in which a portable jacuzzi was wheeled in front of the pavilion during the last quarter of home games.  As dusk fell and the sun lowered behind the bluestone and ivy of the residential colleges, players and supporters sipped their drinks amid the relaxing bubbles.  When the supporters had gone home, players emerged from the soap and froth of the jacuzzi and slid around the pavilion’s parquetry floor.

Over a sandwich in the hospital café, Yeo agreed to attend a training session with the Blues. Brukner’s response was to rush to a phone and ring Alan Salter.

Like many Uni Blues champs, he commenced his senior career while still an Under 19. A skinny kid with a loping stride and a somewhat anaemic look (a “worse suntan than Andrew Lowcock” says one contemporary), opposition players and coaches didn't notice or respect Wilson until they realized he'd kicked half a dozen goals from the flank and it was too late.

As part of an ongoing peek back into Uni Blues history, we recall a 1976 encounter against Reservoir Old Boys…

Before the game, Blues half-forward Michael Sleeman was walking into Reservoir Old Boys’ ground, the Barling Reserve, when two heavily tattooed supporters warned him there was no way he would finish the game.
